A magazine life...

I have always loved magazines. The promise they hold of something new to read about. The promise of the possibility of a life I could lead. The chance to look inside other people's homes, to read about interesting people and their lives or just to enjoy some of the stunning photography.

I grew up with a mother who was always reading even if it was just a quick read of a women's magazine full of celebrity gossip - "candy floss for the brain" was what mum called it. It was her time out, the opportunity to tune out from everything else. I always devoured these magazines but have never been drawn to buying them as they were too fast a read for the money spent. I did start buying magazines in my teenage years. I started with one called Dolly then progressed to Cleo and Cosmo - both full of tips on makeup and relationships and both getting me dreaming of working in an office as that seemed so glamorous. In my twenties I progressed to a magazine called Next that had more in depth stories about women but also had a house and garden section, a recipe section and a beauty section. Suitable for me then as I was setting up my career and buying a first home. After 10 years of buying this I could see stories being repeated so I moved on to a brief stint of beautiful cooking magazines before settling on a magazine I still buy after 15 years called NZ Life and Leisure. It is full of stunning photos and interesting people and I have collected every issue since the first one.

Among these regular subscriptions I have bought the occasional home and garden style magazine which I enjoy until I become saturated with looking at other people's perfect homes. My sister in law loves to buy magazines also and she periodically gives me a bag full which I love to receive. So when I go out to a book store or the supermarket I am drawn to the glossy covers and the promise of what I may see inside, the promise of an opportunity to relax by myself with a cup of tea or time in the hammock.

Today I have picked up one of my NZ Life and Leisure magazines from 4 months ago that has been lying around waiting to be read (my perfectionist streak here will only let me read them in order!) and I have sat and enjoyed it without spending any new money as it was paid for weeks ago. I still haven't finished it and still have the next 2 magazines waiting to be looked at so I just need to keep averting my eyes at the supermarket, when I go, and enjoy what I already have waiting for me at home!

P. S. Thrift shops can have magazines for a fraction of the cost and allow you to indulge for very little money. Another thing to do is to go to your local library and borrow a stack of magazines for free. It is a good way to try titles you normally wouldn't consider. . Who knows what you may find!
