The Joy of a Mini-break
There are times in life when you just need to take a break away from the everyday routine of everyday life. How do you get that break away if time and money are tight? It can be challenging but with a bit of imagination can be possible.
We have had a challenging day today as my husband has had a followup brain scan. He has an incurable brain cancer that he had surgery and chemo/radiation for about 18 months ago and once treatment stopped a year ago he just gets followup scans every 6 months to check to see if it has come back again. This is is 3rd followup scan - the last 2 were clear. We try to live life as normally in between scans but once he has a scan we then get put into this limbo where we are constantly worrying about what the result might be and bargaining with the universe to make it come back with a clear scan again this time. Not easy.
We are very fortunate in many ways however and one of them is being able to own this cute little A-frame house in a town 90 minutes from where we live. We are able to drive up there whenever we can and spend a night or more to have a break away. We decided to do that today and just come for a night as we had engagements back home we had to get back for the next night. It cost us some petrol to get there and nothing else above what we would normally spend - just the cost of food we would eat at home so did not affect the budget.
Every time we come I get so much pleasure and being away from here for a time gives the sense of newness every time we return. This time we came with my son and a friend of his. We have arrived and settled in and they have gone to play some golf while we have sat with a drink and relaxed. It is so good for my soul to do this.
I am aware not everyone has the option of a holiday house to get away to for a mini-break and we are forever grateful that we have this place to go to. Getting a mini-break from life however can be done in a number of ways and can allow for space to think, re-evaluate, make memories and deepen relationships. It could be a day trip somewhere you have never been. It could be done by turning a garden shed into a retreat with a day bed and cushions and filled with things you love to spend time doing. It could be a room in your own home that you make special or even rearrange for a weekend and make it feel different and new and special.
Try to take a mini-break for an hour or two, or overnight and see how it makes you feel. I find it allows my mind a space to think more clearly without the clutter of everyday pushing its way in. If you taken the time to do this it may charge you with the energy needed to face whatever the universe throws at you...
P.S. Check out our happy place on Instagram if you want to see more about it. It's our "tiny house" that we plan to renovate and make stylish on a shoestring! @a.frame.house
