Home Yoga Studio
One of the things on my list to do while I am on leave from
work is to do more exercise. I didn’t want it to be a chore that I felt obliged
to do and I didn’t want to spend lots of money doing it. I’ve fallen for that
many years ago when I first started working and I bought a gym subscription
that I used about 3 times and never went back – I always felt like it was a
huge waste of money.
Yoga was something I tried about 20 years ago at a high
school night class and although it was only for 10 classes there was something
about it that I really liked. I wanted to pursue this but life with children,
working, building a house, and the myriad of other excuses, all got in the way.
I dabbled in an adult ballet class just before turning 40 and I really loved
that – I had danced as a child – Highland dancing and modern dance but never
ballet. I loved going to the class in the old Arts Centre and the beauty of the
precise stretches. It made me feel elegant and strong. But our city had an
earthquake that damaged the Arts Centre and things changed and I stopped going.
I decided I would peruse the internet to see if I could find
something that would allow me to trial yoga again and I found an app that has
cost me nothing (I can easily ignore the ads) and seems to be set up in a way that will keep me motivated to
do a bit of yoga on a regular basis and build my strength and flexibility.
I dragged out the yoga mat I bought years ago with the
intention at the time that it would make me start going to yoga – ha! At least
it is finally getting some use and has allowed to feel like each time I roll it
out I have my own little yoga studio at home. I have been doing it for a week
now and it doesn’t feel onerous yet and hopefully I will continue to feel motivated
to do it. I’ll let you know how I go!
