Laundry Days
I have always wondered about the concept of spring cleaning and why it isn't called summer cleaning! Summer really is the perfect time to get all of the washing done that needs catching up on with the hot sun and warm breezes.
With children growing up we have made changes to bedding situations (remember my previous post about the beds in my hallway that I am trying to sell? - they are still there!!). This has meant changes to the duvets and time to wash and freshen them again before putting them away for guests or to take to our holiday house for the beds up there.
I am fairly scrupulous about keeping things clean but children are messy beings and the duvets end up marked with strange spots and dried blood from nocturnal bleeding noses. When I clean something I like to make it look like new again and I did not want to spend money taking them to the dry-cleaners so it was a job to work on at home.
I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to soak something as large as a double duvet so I tried something out which worked perfectly. I wet the areas I wanted to remove marks from including the old dried blood and sprinkled them with an oxy-cleaner that dissolves in the wet. I let them sit for an hour or two and it worked really well taking the old blood spots out as well as the other marks.
I ran the duvet I could fit through my home washing machine and took the larger ones to the local laundromat then hung them on the line in the sun and wind to dry. With regular fluffing of the feathers over the day I have managed to get lovely fresh clean duvets that looked like new and smelled like fresh air and sunshine. A satisfying job to get done!
