Today is my husband's birthday and we have had a day different to usual but special in many ways. It is most special because he has reached another birthday and when life is threatened these milestones become so important. It is easy to complain about birthdays as we get older and see the numbers going up but when the tables are turned and you know that the number of birthdays you will see are lessened then it makes you appreciate reaching any numbers. Remember when you complain about getting old some people actually wish they could get old!
We have had an early morning flight up to our largest city for him to meet with his new cancer specialist in person and to have planning undertaken for the new radiation treatment for his cancer. This included having to make a mask for his head that will be used to hold him still and in the same place each day that he has the radiation. Once that was all done we had the rest of the day free to spend as we wished. Because his MRI wasn't until the next day we had to stay overnight and an old friend was kindly putting us up.
We had decided we would head out for dinner with our friend and we drove to the local shopping area near her house. Being a Monday night I thought there might not be much open but the place was bustling with little restaurants. My husband chose a quaint little Japanese restaurant that my friend knew well so we headed in. She had spent time in Japan when she was younger so knew a lot about what to order and it was an adventure as she took us through suggestions on the menu.
If she hadn't been there I am sure we wouldn't have been quite as adventurous - not wanting to risk spending our money on something we couldn't eat. With her help we chose things we probable would never have looked at and we pleasantly surprised at how good everything tasted!
As she was kindly putting us up for the night we shouted the whole meal but for the experience and the memory and the celebration of my husband being another year old it was so worth every dollar spent and we have a wonderful memory that we can enjoy for a long time to come!
It is times like this that the money we have saved in other areas and put aside can be used for a good reason and makes all the saving well worth it - from the great meal out to being able to afford the flights and the specialist medical treatment that is not available on the public purse. I am forever grateful for being careful with our money!
