Umbrella Love

I have a thing for umbrellas and own several. I have my large black business like Blunt™  umbrella that is perfect for standing watching football in the rain. I have a small black travel umbrella, I have a compact black umbrella in one car glove box and a compact red spotty one in the other car. I have used this red one a couple of times for sun protection - once when I ended up at the beach and realised the sun block was not enough, the other time when I went to the lake near work at lunchtime on a whim with no sunblock or hat and the umbrella in my glove box provided the perfect solution for sun protection that day.

I was thinking about this for some reason today as we headed out to spend the day watching our daughter dragon boating. I remembered the decorative umbrella my mother gave me several years ago that has a Renoir painting on it and I decided it would be perfect to use for sun protection today so I grabbed it on the way out. I have never used this umbrella in the rain and often forget I own it. It has lovely soft colours and a curved wooden handle so doesn't look as utilitarian as some of my other umbrellas.

I have seen the occasional person using an umbrella in the sun - not a silly idea with the strength with which it beats down on us in New Zealand - but I know most people think it is a bit odd and usually the people you see using them are tourists from Asia. I really enjoyed using it for this today. The colours in the umbrella matched what I was wearing (purely by accident) and I found myself feeling grateful for this portable shelter that felt a bit old fashioned but also a bit carefree, romantic and maybe looked a bit stylish too!
On the other hand people may have thought I was a bit odd but I actually didn't care and it felt good to be using something I don't often use and getting to enjoy it despite it hanging forgotten in my wardrobe most of the time. If it meant I got to enjoy being out on a sunny day without being burnt or aging my skin or working on that melanoma then I was quite pleased to do it!
