International Woman's Day

Several years ago my then 11 year old son came in to say goodnight and while there told me it was International Women's Day - how an 11 year old boy knew that when I didn't impressed me! He then asked my husband if he had known what day it had been or done anything special for me as I was a woman and it was my day and alas my husband had to admit he hadn't done anything.

I spontaneously decided that I should get a massage of sorts and my son - who was at the age of finding anything he could to procrastinate going to bed - was happy to oblige. I have a wire head massager that we have had for over 20 years and often forget we own - it gives one of my favourite sensory experiences that I don't do often enough. I suggested he give me a head massage for International Women's Day and when he did it gave me goose bumps and it felt so relaxing.

As today was that special day again I thought I would convince my now 14 year old son to do it again. A luxury head massage was just what I needed and he was happy to oblige again. A luxurious head massage - it was so nice!

I know we have raised strong daughters who will be strong women but our other job is to raise our son to be a loving man who respects women and is happy to show love and kindness towards them. Having him give me a head massage was a lovely time spent with my son and I hope it is teaching him the power of a soft touch and the joy of caring for someone else. It is a shame it isn't International Woman's Day more often!
