Gifts from the Garden
We went around to my mum's for a visit today to have a cuppa and a catch up. She is 80 years old and very independent and active. Her garden is wonderful - full of interesting flowers and plants that she finds when out and about. Her fruit and vegetable garden is always productive too and produces far more than she can eat on her own which is fortunate for us!
While there today we went out and helped with some small jobs in her garden which I enjoyed doing as I love gardening too. It was a good feeling to be able to help her out. While there she found some plants for me to take home and she and my husband picked some fruit and vegetables for us.
I have had a productive garden like this in the past but with the last couple of years and all of its stressors we have neglected to plant as much as we could. When I see a bag of produce like this picked from a garden it gets me excited to have ours productive again - I'm just not sure when that will be!
I do remember with a chuckle when a friend came to visit many years ago with her young children. We were on our way out to see our chickens and her son stopped beside the vege garden we had in with its rows of lettuces and he said "Look mum! It's a supermarket!"
The colours of the fruit from my mum today were so vibrant and I am very grateful for this bounty we came home with. It all helped save a bit at the supermarket this week - it really is like having a supermarket at your own place!
