Secondhand Treasures

One of my favourite things to do is rummage in thrift stores to find treasures for a good price. Many of my favourite pieces at home are just such treasures.

When I was a hard up university student buying secondhand was a necessity. When I first went flatting I went to buy a bed for my little room. It had to be a single bed and at the time (30 years ago) the prices varied around $40-70.00. While at the shop I spotted a lovely oak bed that was $130. Now being strapped for cash I couldn't really justify spending that much more for a bed but it had caught my eye and I couldn't leave it in the store and take a cheaper ugly bed. I am still so grateful I made that decision as I still own that bed today and still love it. My children have slept on it and I have well and truly got my my money's worth.

Over the years we have collected various pieces in a similar way and they give me a pleasure that new furniture doesn't always provide - partly because they are usually a better price that brand new. I also like purchasing from an opportunity store as the money I spend is also going to a charity so it benefits others in need.

I am currently enjoying this collection that I have acquired over the last few years but have placed together for the first time on my coffee table. The wooden bowl is my latest acquisition and cost me a whole $3.00. The pottery vase was $8.00 and the small dish was $5.00. I love the colours together and the form of each one and the pleasure they give me. For the money spent I think it is well worth it and much cheaper than a fancy homewares store!
