Trainspotting
As it is a long weekend we decided to make a trip up to our holiday house for a night away. The kids didn't want to or couldn't come so it was just my husband and I and my mum who we invited along. This road is one we are getting to know well and it would be easy to worry that we could become bored with it but that has not been the case yet as the scenery is interesting and it always seems to look different at different times of the day
Today travelling on this familiar road we got a surprise! We got to see the steam train that runs once a month for rides for the public on and old track that is no longer in regular use.
We've never managed to see it before and it was so delightful to see it driving through familiar landscape looking like a train heading for Hogwarts. There were children on board who were waving to the people stopped along the road to see it and it felt quite magical and out of the ordinary. It really made my day and I just wished the kids had been there to see it.
Seeing as we didn't have the kids in tow we also decided spontaneously to stop at the historic pub we have driven past so many times. This is a limestone building dating back to the mid 19th century that was badly damaged in an earthquake several years ago. It has been restored and it was gorgeous inside.
The windows were pretty with deep sills due to the thick stone walls and the place had a cosy feel about it with the low ceilings. There was a bustling lunch trade and the busy-ness gave it a welcoming feel.
