By the Fire

It's a Saturday evening after a sunny day with a cool wind. We got some chores done and it's time to relax. The stars are out and it feels like it might frost so we have decided to light our first fire for the season. We have a passive solar house built of concrete that stays quite warm on sunny days and holds the heat after the sun goes down so we can often go days in winter when we don't need to light the fire however the stay at home feeling seemed to ask for one to be lit tonight.

When we bought our piece of land nearly 18 years ago one of the first things we did was plant a large stand of 1600 eucalyptus trees for firewood. They are tall now and naturally some fall over with wind so we get all of our firewood from there for no cost. We have a low emission firebox and the eucalyptus burns quite hot with little smoke emission so we figure that with all of our trees and the little wood we burn we are in good carbon credit for the environment.

It is so cosy and I love watching the flickering flames. They can be quite mesmerizing. Nothing beats the heat of a fire, the warm feeling the glow gives to the room and it makes for a great Saturday night cosying up at home. Magic!
