Feathering My Nest
Today I spent the whole day in the garden and it was fantastic! It is one of my happy places where I just zone out and keep pottering and enjoy seeing the progress.
I raked leaves which gave an immediate sense of satisfaction and is quite therapeutic I find. I planted plants that I have had sitting in pots waiting to have a place to grow properly - they needed me to net them from the rabbits which like to come and nibble and dig up anything new in the garden. Apparently they are neo-phobic. I pruned hedges that had been waving random branches at me and they looked much more ordered. I dead-headed plants that had finished for the season and got them ready for a quiet winter before they burst forth again in spring. I mulched around plants with the leaves I had raked up - all free mulch and a good place to put the leaves. They look so nice on the garden.
I got so involved in all of the jobs I wanted to do that I worked through lunch and didn't even feel hungry. My body got a workout and I did not do anywhere near technology the whole day. it kept me entertained all that time for no cost and I was so pleased with how it looked when it was done. By spending that time at home and outside it also meant there was no opportunity to go out and spend money unnecessarily. I even found 2 small seedlings of bushes I like so I was able to transplant them to somewhere I wanted them to go - free plants!
I have enlarged our two piles of garden rubbish with all of the prunings and deadheading so we will need to deal to those in the next couple of weeks but even they looked kind of sculptural and tidy in their own way.
I was able to end the day feeling like I had made the garden look more the way I wanted it to and felt like I had "feathered our nest" to be something that is beautiful to look out onto and adds value to our home. Almost as beautiful as the perfectly crafted blackbird nest I found under a tree today. Look how beuatiful round and smooth that is on the inside - perfect for cosying up in!
