It's Raining, It's Pouring!

We are in the middle of a one in 100 year event with the rain coming down persistently for over 24 hours and due to continue for another 14 or 15 hours. The weather forecasters predicted this and they were spot on!

There is water everywhere over much of the district with rivers bursting or threatening to burst their banks everywhere. Our property is originally old swamp in many days gone by so it holds the water for a bit before it drains away. It is great in summer as we often stay green when everyone else has lawns turning brown. In times of high rainfall such as this the water puddles for a bit in low lying areas. We've cut swales through our garden to help drain the water and they work well but at this time of year they are clogged with autumn leaves.

Today I've been out in the rain several times clearing the drains of leaves and baling out around our septic tanks which can't get water in them. The rest of the time we have been holed up inside enjoying the fire and eating soup and drinking copious cups of tea - trying not to worry that the flooding will get worse. It was the perfect opportunity to mostly just stop and be.  I didn't get a chance to think about anything new in my day until I got to the end of it when I was outside doing some drain checking in the dying light of the day. I noticed how the raindrops looked like jewels on the bushes - nature really is clever even when she comes to wreak some havoc!
